Prepare A Water Tank. Get Ready for Drought

Because “drinking water” is essential, it’s the first thing needed for living especially in a catastrophic situation. Therefore, keeping the water hoarding sufficient is necessary in case of no water or drought. Like Thai houses in the past, they had big earthen jars for water hoarding lined up in their houses. But today, we changed from using big earthen jars to a big water tank. Simply put the water inside and we have water to use for a long time. Which water tank size is suitable and sufficient for members in each family? Let’s get to know the different types of water tanks to be suitable for your family.

Water Tank Models

There are many types of water tanks, depending on usage, location for installing, area of the house and with suitable budget.

Stainless Steel Tank

Stainless Steel Tank is durable for rain, sunlight, light-weight and does not get rusty. Easy to clean and install. No smell when water is stored for a long time. With a drain at the bottom of the tank. Cautions : The tank sealing might get leaked and rusty. Not suitable for storing brackish water or sea water.

FiberGlass Tank

FiberGlass Tank is suitable for industrial systems, not suitable for storing drinking water, can be installed both on ground or underground, does not get rusty. Cautions : For long-term use, fibers from fiberglass may deteriorate and fall off, causing contamination in the water. Hard to clean and heavy weight, which is not easy for moving.

Polymer ELIXIR Tank

Polymer ELIXIR Tank is can resist ultraviolet light, it does not crack easily. Opaque. Does not cause lichen. Suitable for water hoarding. Nice shape and color, suitable with all modern house styles. Cautions: Hard to clean up the sediment, because the drain is on the side of tank. Be careful of the joints, they may fall apart. The tank is very heavy. Not easy for moving and installing.

PE Tank

PE Tank is a plastic water tank durable for corrosion of acids and some chemicals. Seamless. Does not get rusty. Can be installed both on ground or underground. If the tank is made of good grade plastic, it can store drinking water. Cautions: There may be slippery slime in the tank. Not easy for moving and cleaning. When the tank is put out in the sun for too long, it causes the smell of plastic degradation mixed with water.

Which Tank Size Suits Your Family?

At an average, one person uses water about 200 liters/day/person, for calculating the water tank size: calculate from the amount of members in the house multiply with water consumption per day. (the result should be multiplied again by 2, in case of water shortage more than 1 day). As for the tank for rain water hoarding, choose the largest size for a large space. Rain water must be stored enough for 1 year forward.

Information for Water Tank Installation

When you already got a water tank, you need to specify the place to install the tank. Most importantly, if you buy a big tank, make sure that you can fit it into your house. See whether you can move it through your gate.
  • The tank must be installed straight from the meter into the tank with a distance of not more than 2 meters. Pump installation should not be directly exposed to the sun and rain. It should be installed at least 5 cm. away from the wall. The width of the surrounding area should be at least 10 cm wide. Make sure the upper part has enough space to open the tank lid easily.

  • Installing the tank on the newly poured concrete floor, concrete should be at least 7 days old to carry much weight. It should be 90% tough. Or after 28 days, it can carry full weight.

  • Install the tank in a position where the connection of the tank to the pump is convenient, unobtrusive and connect the drain at the bottom of the tank for easy cleaning.

  • Use connectors such as PCV, brass or stainless steel size ¾ or 1 inch to make water flow faster and to prevent corrosion and rust.
The water in the tank storage should be changed every one year. If there are no emergencies, the water should be used for routine such as watering plants, car wash or cleaning. Then, put fresh water to ensure water is clean for future emergencies.
